2024-25 Sumner HS Marching Band & Color Guard

(Updated 3/30/2025)

....................................................................................

I hope that you have enjoyed an “off-weekend” for the first time in over a month and have had a chance to recharge and get ready for a BIG week ahead for our Sumner HS Band. We didn’t even have a Marching Band rehearsal or Benefit Night performance on Wednesday due to the “severe storm” (but really, I’m glad that safety is the top priority of our District and it wouldn’t have been good to be caught in any kind of severe thunderstorm, so it’s completely OK to cancel out of safety). This week is going to be really busy as we make our way to Saturday and the 4 Daffodil Parades, but so far the advanced weather reports are saying it just might be . . . BEAUTIFUL! With partly sunny weather and a projected high temperature Saturday of 67 degrees and NO RAIN, we may finally get outside in some great conditions - and I know we always perform better when the weather is nicer so let’s hope the forecasters are right. Getting to Friday and Saturday might be challenging though, as we might have wetter weather on Wednesday, but we’ll see. While the parades are the “big deal” this week, we’ve also got a couple of other important events, including the MB & CG Uniform Refitting on Monday night and the first combined Musical Pit Orchestra & Cast Rehearsal on Thursday from 2:30-5:00PM followed by the rescheduled Benefit Night performances by BOTH Jazz Ensembles A and B from 6:35-7:00PM. Our BIGGEST LOCAL PERFORMANCES OF THE YEAR however are the Pre-Daffodil Stadium performance on Friday night, where we’ll be see by our future MS members (and their parents) and the FULL-DAY 4-PERFORMANCES OF THE DAFFODIL PARADES ON SATURDAY. I’ve attached our Time-Line and Information (as well as our Trip Permission Form) so you’ll know where and when to be, and for parents and families to see you at least once (maybe they can follow us to all 4 events on Saturday). Here’s the parade start-times (we’ll be near the front of all parades at Unit #22)

  • The Tacoma Daffodil Parade in Downtown Tacoma starting at 10:15AM
  • The Puyallup Daffodil Parade in Downtown Puyallup starting at 12:45PM
  • Our Hometown Sumner Daffodil Parade down Main Street starting at 2:30PM
  • The Orting Daffodil Parade down the Main Street of Orting starting at 5:00PM

There are well over 100 separate groups marching in one, two, three or, like us, all 4 of the parades, so students will need to bring sack lunches (we eat on the road between the end of the Tacoma Parade and before the Puyallup Parade). They'll also get hot dogs and drinks from the Orting Eagles before the Orting Parade. It’s a long day but since we’re in near-constant motion it’ll go quickly and students can start their vacation as soon as we get back to school from Orting and we’ll have NO BAND ACTIVITIES OVER SPRING BREAK!

As I mentioned before, we can always use parents who are school district approved as chaperones to help with our street rehearsals to serve as flaggers, etc. as we march around the streets of Sumner as well as come with us on the buses for the Daffodil Parades April 5th.

So, here’s our upcoming 3-week schedule:

WHILE THIS UNIFORM REFITTING SHOULDN’T BE AS LONG AND DRAWN-OUT AS OUR INITIAL UNIFORM FITTING IN THE FALL, WE’LL STILL NEED LOTS OF PARENTS AND STUDENT-LEADERS TO HELP GET THINGS RESET FOR ALL OF OUR MB AND CG STUDENTS. SOME STUDENTS MAY HAVE CHANGED SIZES OVER THE LAST 8 MONTHS SINCE THEY INITIALLY RECEIVED THEIR UNIFORMS, SO WE WANT THEM TO COMPLETELY TRY-ON THEIR UNIFORMS (INCLUDING BAND SHOES) AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS IN ORDER (AS THE STUDENTS KNOW, I’VE GOT SEVERAL BALDRICS THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN TURNED-IN FOR CLEANING). We don’t get seen live and in-person by more people from more of our local communities the entire year than what we’ll be doing this Friday and Saturday. You are outstanding people and we are an outstanding Band Program - you know that and we know that. This week we want to make sure - VERY SURE - THAT THEY KNOW THAT! Virtually every Band in the area will be performing in at least one Daffodil Parade and we want to show them our best - playing, marching, routines, uniforms, EVERYTHING! Just give your best every day in rehearsals and make those rehearsals the reflection of how we’ll be doing in our 5 performances. Thanks so much for your hard work and WE ARE GOING TO DO A GREAT JOB!!

See you Monday
