2025-26 Sumner Summer Marching Band & Color Guard

(Updated 9/14/2025)

....................................................................................

We had a very good first full-week of school classes and activities and 3 big performances last week. As I posted last week in the BLAST, we hit a home-run on everything we did:

  • First week of Jazz Ensembles Rehearsals and Sectionals
  • DL & MB Classes each day - working on our Halftime performance for Friday (Summer MB music and routine review and an encore performance of the Color Guard feature from Saturday’s UW Husky Band Day), new Pep Band Music and a start to our field show charting.
  • CG Rehearsals on Monday and Thursday with lots of routine work
  • Our first Band Leadership Council Meeting (BLC) on Tuesdays
  • Senior Band Parents Meeting on Tuesday
  • Our first Sumner Band Parents Meeting (SBPA) on Tuesday
  • And as I mentioned - THE 3 PERFORMANCES:
    • FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT THE OPENING PEP ASSEMBLY
    • FRIDAY AFTERNOON & EVENING FOR OUR FIRST HOME FB GAME WIN
    • SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING AT SOUTH SOUND SPEEDWAY WHERE WE PERFORMED FOR THE CAR RACES AND HAD A GREAT TIME

We were proud of all that you did and how you did it so well. We still have some things to work on (being back at the end of the 3rd quarter, some bus actions, and other things that we WILL do better) but given that we had a lot of people doing new things, it went overall very well last week. Thanks also to the many parents who assisted us in everything from uniforms to halftime snacks and chaperoning on our trip - we hope that all of you know that we couldn’t do it without them. Please make sure you thank them personally when you get the chance - they all want you to have a great experience in our Band and they’re willing to give-up a LOT of their own personal time to make it happen.

Now on a sad note, as you know Mrs. Carl wasn’t at the South Sound Speedway trip on Saturday afternoon as she was visiting her mom in the hospital - unfortunately while she was there on Saturday afternoon her mom passed-on but I’m glad she was able to be there with her. She was a GIANT fan of our Band Program and showed-up at so many concerts and events over the years, from the 1998 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade to other events like the Daffodil Parades and Jazz Competitions - she lived to be 96 and had a great life which is a good goal for all of us to work towards. Her funeral is scheduled for early this week so I’ll be missing a few days of school but Mrs. Selle will be the sub and will do a great job.

Check the BLAST for any schedule changes and please keep working hard towards our next MB-CG performance on Friday as the defending State 4A Football Champion of Washington (us, in case you didn’t know) plays the Big School FB State Champion of Oregon (West Linn HS) - it is going to be a fantastic game with a fantastic crowd on Friday. Here’s the upcoming 2-week Sumner HS Band Program schedule:

Thank you again for all of the excellent things you’ve done so far in this first month (including the summer preseason) and let’s keep building on the great efforts we’ve already established. We’ve got another challenging week coming-up as so many of you haven’t ever marched a field show drill and music before. Work hard - give your best - focus on the combination of music-routine and marching and let’s be ready to get this part of the year started! I’ll see you later this week and we’ll do our best on Friday and help our team to win another game too!
